Stress and Social Media

As part of our unit on stress, we are focusing in on social media and the impacts on teens.  It is a very interesting phenomenon, that we are just now starting to understand.  Please use the link below or follow the QR code provided in class to read the articles.   The first is an article from the American Academy of Pediatrics.  You will need to focus on this one as these types of articles can be dry.  It is full of information, and I'd like your take on it.

The second is a CNN study on social media and teens.

Finally, a report out yesterday:

http://thenewdaily.com.au/life/2015/11/08/teen-social-media-anxiety-depression/

After reading, watching and researching, I'd like you to do the following:

Summarize the research and discussions in a one page paper to be shared with your parents this evening when you get home.  I have sent an email home notifying parents of your assignment.

At home, you will:
  1. Share your paper with your parents.
  2. Discuss the issues that you've listed.
    1. Are they an issue in your life?
    2. Are these just adults over-reacting?
    3. Is there any correlation between increased stress levels of today's youth and the amount of time online?
  3. Develop a list of real concerns (minimum of two) you have in relation to how much time and energy is spent on social media or gaming.
  4. Come up with a strategy to manage time online and reduce stress.
  5. List those and the stresses/anxieties created by constant interaction online.
    1. For example:  "I am constantly checking to see how many 'likes" I get on a post".  or "I wake several times a night checking my instagram".
  6. Finally, I'd like a sentence or two from your parents as to how cell phone/online engagement is impacting you.  You and your parents may see this completely different.  I'd like you to see this as well.
These will be due Thursday the 12th in class.   I don't give homework often.  Please take time to do this right.  Remember:  I need your parents to write up a reaction to your discussions.

"Bully" movie questions and thoughts.

Bully Movie Questions.   Copy these into "notability" and answer them.  Turn them in at the end of the period.
  1. What makes someone a bully? Why do you think people become bullies?
  2. Think of the students who are highlighted in the film Alex, Kelby, Jameya, Ty and Tyler. What
about them made them targets for bullies? What makes someone appear to be an outsideror
    outcast?
  3. Tylers father says that while Tyler didnt come home with bloody noses and broken bones, he
did come home with emotional wounds. What is the difference between physical abuse and
mental abuse? Why is mental abuse possibly more damaging than physical abuse?
  4. Think of the different stories that are told in the film. Who is to blamein each of these
stories? Who is to blame for Tylers suicide? Who is to blame for the abuse Alex experiences?
  5. The film focuses on both the student perspective and the adult/parent perspective. Do you feel
that the parents and adults understand what the students are going through? How do they try
to reach out to the students? How do they succeed? How do they fail?
  6. Kelby has a strong group of friends that support her. How important are friends? How does
having friends help boost self-esteem and confidence for Kelby?
page1image21312

  1. How do the parents and other students try to stop bullying? Talk about the different things they do to accomplish their goal.
  2. What resources are available at your school for victims of bullying? Do you feel safe from bullies at your school?
  3. Have you ever bullied someone or been bullied? Explain how you felt and the result/consequences.
  4. How could you help someone who is being bullied? What can you do to stop bullying in your school?

**Finally, please write a paragraph explaining what you feel the truth about Bullying is in Bend.  Is it particularly bad at Summit?  Middle School? Elementary School?   If you think it's become an issue, would you have any ideas as to how to deal with it?

**Answer all of these questions and turn in to the drop box.  Bullying is a social issue that has real implications on someone. We CAN do something about it, but in order for that to happen...we have to take it seriously and attend to it.
